Label Text:Working in the late 1600s and the early decades of the 1700s, Nicolaes Verkolje often modeled his work on the scenes of everyday life by Dutch painters of some 50 years earlier. The intimate size, smooth finish, and wood panel support (rather than canvas) all were influenced by these earlier masters. The subject, too, was popular in the early to mid 1600s. See The Fortune Teller with Soldiers (1620) by Valentin de Boulogne in the Great Gallery (Gallery 36) for another take on the gypsy fortune teller theme.
