Label Text:Haarlem artist Jan Miense Molenaer was one of the leading painters of genre scenes—scenes of everyday life—in the first half of the 17th century. Though set in a wealthy Dutch middle class home with contemporary furnishings, this painting is more than a scene of daily life: it is an allegory about the vain love of earthly pleasure. See the card below for more information about the painting’s meaning.

Allegory of Vanity is displayed in a 17th-century Dutch fruit wood frame. Though paintings seldom stay united with their original frames over the centuries, wherever possible the Museum displays paintings in frames that are appropriate to the period in which the painting was produced.
