Label TextThe Christ Child points out a passage of scripture—perhaps one alluding to his eventual crucifixion—as he gazes up at his young mother. The reference to Christ’s death is further underlined by the sarcophagus on which Mary is seated and its carved relief representing Charity. The drapery over the sarcophagus suggests a shroud. By 1670, Carlo Maratti was considered the leading painter in Rome and was patronized by successive Popes.Published ReferencesWaagen, G.
