This study for a finished, bust-length painting now in the collection of the Château de Parentignat in France depicts the painter Gabriel Blanchard (1630–1704). The son of the better-known painter Jacques Blanchard (1600–1638), Gabriel worked for Louis XIV as keeper of the royal collection. He was also professor and, later, treasurer at the Royal Academy.
