Label Text:Referred to in his day as the “King of landscape painters,” Francesco Zuccarelli specialized in poetic, imaginative scenes that often included a sense of playfulness (see, for example, the awkward backwards descent of the young lady to retrieve her hat from the water). The forceful, dark forms of the pine trees on the right are offset by the lyrical light of the setting sun that spotlights the figures and turns the clouds a glowing pink.

Look for the gourd bottle in this painting—“zucco” is Italian for gourd, so Zuccarelli often included one in his paintings as a visual pun for his name.
