Label Text:Dagobert Peche joined the Wiener Werkstätte (WW) in 1915 and was its artistic director from 1919 to 1923. Peche embraced the decorative and craft aspects of design rather than the emulation of machine production, but his vision was in opposition to the practical down-to-earth concerns that had previously dominated the Vienna Workshops. With a strong accent on individuality rather than a shared WW signature style, Peche's work often conveys an unbridled exoticism. His designs were highly decorative and his style animated, asymmetrical, and organic. Josef Hoffmann heralded him as "the greatest decorative genius that Austria has harbored since the Baroque period."
