Label Text:While his fellow painters and friends (such as John Sloan and George Bellows, also in this gallery) were concentrating on views of contemporary urban life, Arthur B. Davies created dreamlike landscapes often inhabited by classical nudes and fantastic creatures. In the summer of 1905, he took an extended trip to the West Coast, where he was awed by the majestic redwood trees and vistas of the Sierra Nevadas. In The Redwoods he seems to transplant a scene from ancient Greek mythology to the wilderness of the American West.
