Label Text:This picture was painted in response to an invitation by the dealer Allan Frumkin to several artists to paint a large still life for an exhibition to take place in the winter of 1979.
Beal said he decided to paint the back of a still life arrangement that had already been set up by his wife, the painter Sondra Freckleton, for the canvas she was painting for the same Frumkin show. Beal added the large begonia plant through which his wife is seen working on her painting.
