Label Text:David Huchthausen was one of the initial studio glass artists to emphasize coldworking techniques like laminating, laser-cutting, and sawing. His unusual asymmetrical form seen here with its bright blocks of color is made in part from a type of colored structural glass developed in the United States around 1900. Although a brand name, the term Vitrolite is often used generically to describe this particularly hard glass that is used for architectural purposes. It was prized in the early 20th century for its shiny surface, durability, and resistance to dirt and germs that provided an especially sanitary surface for use in the modern kitchen.
