Label Text:When Joel Philip Myers introduced his “Dr. Zarkov” series in 1970, he had already set up a glass program at Illinois State University. The works in that series gain their height simply by stacking similar, thinly-blown forms into tall, totemic sculptures with mirrored and colored zones seemingly defying gravity. Their perfection set them apart from most other Studio Glass that relied instead on organic forms. Their repetition and uniformity, employed to great effect by minimalist sculptors such as Donald Judd, suggested industrial production as a concept—a creative statement yet untried in Studio Glass at the time.
