Label Text:Born in Paris, which he rarely left, Georges Michel’s entire work consists of landscapes. In about 1800 he was commissioned by the Louvre to restore 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, an experience influential on his own art. This landscape with a church spire and characteristic windmills was probably inspired by the countryside near Montmartre, which in the early 19th century was open land on the northern edge of Paris.
