Label Text:Joyce Kozloff explores geometric ornament and the aesthetic possibilities of pattern. Drawing inspiration from various cultures and their decorative traditions, Kozloff attempts to “create a hybrid, a fusion of diverse materials.”

Embracing an aesthetic based on decorative repetition was not an easy thing to do in the mid-1970s when Minimalism reigned, and the individual artist’s creative vision was seen as of primary importance. At the time, any art based on pattern and reliant on historic example was held in low esteem. In this atmosphere artists like Kozloff developed an art based on craft, rationality, and tradition.
