Published in late autumn of 1858 as part of the French Set, this early portrait of a young seamstress is, in part, Whistler's reaction to the writing of the French author/critic Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867). Baudelaire strongly disliked the idealized academic painting styles so popular in 18th- and 19th-century France. Instead, he encouraged young artists to work from nature and from life. In keeping with Baudelaire's advice, Whistler's art from this period often depicted Parisian street life. These urban studies have been compared to the Parisian work of Paul Gavarni (French, 1804-1866), while the influence of Rembrandt (Dutch, 1606-1669) is also evident. Works by both Gavarni and Rembrandt can be seen nearby.
