Label Text:The SCHATZBEHALTER (or treasury of the richness of the saints and of eternal salvation) was the first of two great picture books these two artists produced for publisher Anton Koberger. (The other major illustrated book is the NUREMBERG CHRONICLE exhibited nearby.) The collection of devotional and edifying texts compiled by Fridolin, a Nuremberg Franciscan preacher, was a series of meditations on the life of Christ with references to Old Testament pre figuration. The text was accompanied by 96 woodcut illustrations, this being one which shows the finding of Moses. The gothic angularity in the crisp drapery folds, brocades and crinkled hair belong to the pre-Renaissance world. The image also exhibits the mastery achieved by Germany's top illustrators before Albrecht Dürer surpassed him.
