Label Text:This haunting image of a crane seen from behind, delicately preening its wing feathers in a misty mountain landscape, is an unusual depiction of this bird that is so ubiquitous in Japanese art. The beauty, grace, behavior, and long lifespan of the crane have made it a symbol of happiness, marital fidelity, and longevity. The crane depicted here appears to be the Red-Crowned (Japanese) Crane, though it sports the red eye of a Common Crane.
