Label Text:The Countess Gower was the daughter of the sixth Earl of Carlisle, and in 1823 she married George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, later the second Duke of Sutherland. She is depicted here with her young daughter, who later became the Duchess of Argyll. Samuel Cousins was one of the most prolific English mezzotint makers and was noted for the high quality of his engravings. He received many important commissions in his lifetime and was the only engraver ever raised to membership in the Royal Academy.
