Ansel Adams, artist, unintentional environmentalist, and American icon, made over 40,000 photographs in a remarkable career spanning more than 60 years. Adams felt that precise control of the technical process was essential to creative expression in photography. While he could not change the relationship and position of the subjects in his photographs, he could manipulate the image via methods of exposure and development, lens and filter selection, and camera adjustment to produce prints markedly different from the original scene. He considered this a legitimate and necessary aspect of artistic interpretation.
