Label Text:Cézanne had never created a replica of one of his own paintings until he made this four-color lithograph. It follows closely a painting from twenty years before which he had shown in the 1877 Impressionist exhibition. Cézanne’s paintings were hardly known at the time, but this was perhaps his most familiar work. He was little involved in printmaking, and this, his most ambitious endeavor in the genre, represents one of only eight prints he produced during his entire career. Encouraged by his dealer Ambroise Vollard during Vollard’s venture as an art publisher, Cézanne created this print for an issue of a Vollard publication, though one that came to fruition.
