Whistler first met Henri Fantin-Latour in 1858 while on a visit to the Louvre. Fantin-Latour was copying a painting when Whistler approached him. The two recognized in each other a love of realism and a long association arose, though Whistler was never attracted to the classical and literary subject matter that appealed to Fantin-Latour.
