Label Text:The prints of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec are important in the story of Modern art. This is one of the strongest and most incisive lithographs that Lautrec produced. As one of the pioneers of the lithography revival of the 1890s, he helped to raise the technique, which had sunk to a commercial level in the late 19th-century, through his innovative compositions, superb drawing skills, and advanced coloration.

Lautrec was an observer of Parisian life in music halls, theaters, cafes, brothels, and at the racetrack. He employed an inspired economy of line to portray the expressions and attitudes of the figures. The bright, rich colors and daring simplification of the composition reflect the influence of French expressionist artist Paul Gauguin and of Japanese woodblock prints.
