Label Text:Albrecht Altdorfer was an independent artist; neither Dürer nor the Italian Renaissance influenced him. He experimented with many techniques, including etching on iron, and with multi-block color woodcuts. In this print we see a high degree of abstraction (not true to nature) and lack of detail. The effects of light and dark are of primary importance in this image. We can also sense the spontaneity of drawing directly on the woodblock, which was later carved and printed.
