Label Text:The Renaissance scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466?-1536) traveled widely and taught Greek at Cambridge University. He is perhaps best known for his Greek edition of the New Testament with Latin translation, published in 1516. Hans Holbein, court painter to King Henry VIII of England, painted a portrait of Erasmus as early as 1523. This woodcut was executed as frontispiece for the complete edition of Erasmus’ works published in Basel in 1540.
