Label Text:Considered by scholars to be one of the most successful of Manet’s etchings, this print after the Velázquez portrait Philip IV of Spain in the Louvre, demonstrates Manet’s early romantic, improvisatory manner. It features bold, deeply bitten straight lines that dramatically capture the spirit of the Velázquez painting and epitomize the ideal, bravura technique of the 19th century printmakers. Also, the undeniable influence of the 18th century Spanish master Francisco Goya (see Goya’s Disasters of War in the case nearby) is demonstrated in the broken contour line and marked contrast between the uniform dark areas and a free, calligraphic treatment of the light areas.
