Label Text:In this work from Schongauer’s mature years, emphasis is placed on the main figure while the background is barely suggested. What is stressed is the delicate pattern of the tree against the blank sky and the finely drawn figure of the saint, who Schongauer shows at peace in his martyrdom. This image does not imitate painting; it reflects more the basic element of printmaking¬¬¬¬ – black ink on paper.
