THE PRESENTATION,
FROM LIFE OF THE VIRGIN
Engraving on paper, about 1500
Museum Purchase, 1936.92
It has been estimated that over 3,000 engraved plates were made during the 15th-century in Northern Europe. Of these, over 600 are by Van Meckenham. The majority of his work was based on designs by others, especially Martin Schongauer. This print, from a series issued about 1500, is based on a drawing by Hans Holbein the Elder. Typical for the period, we see two events depicted as if happening simultaneously.
