Label Text:Whistler first met Alphonse Legros through the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904). Whistler had previously become acquainted with Fantin-Latour while the two were making copies of paintings at the Louvre. The three artists formed a loose association they called "Société des Trois" (Society of the Three). As can be seen in their prints displayed in this exhibition, their styles and choice of subject matter were markedly different. The uniting factor in the group was their love of printmaking.

Charity was published in the Art Journal in 1881. The Art Journal was an influential British visual arts annual published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that commissioned original artwork.
