Label Text:Jean Duvet was among the earliest to practice engraving in France. Trained as a silversmith, his work is filled with detail similar to that on engraved silverware of the time. A mystic, he belonged to a fanatic Catholic fraternity, but later, in Geneva, he worked for the Protestant Calvinists, designing coins, stained glass, and fortifications. Among his best works, which show his tendency towards mysticism, was a set of illustrations for the Apocalypse of St. John. His heavy and dark style, along with the phantasmagoric forms, reinforces the mood of the subject depicted.
