Label Text:Whistler’s style changed between the etching of the French Set (12 etchings published in 1861) and the Thames Set (published a decade later). The influence of his contemporary Charles Émile Jacque’s densely spaced lines and of Rembrandt’s sketchy calligraphic style waned in favor of the clean line that evolved from topographers like Charles Meryon. The spatial compositions of the Thames etchings also appear to be influenced by Meryon, as well as by photography and Japanese woodblock prints.
