Label Text:Jan Brueghel (about 1568–1625) was a very successful Flemish painter active in Antwerp. He was the second son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (about 1525–1569) and was especially noted for his facility with compositions full of various textures (this talent earned him the nickname “Velvet” Brueghel). His paintings of flowers were particularly sought after, but he was also skilled at landscapes (see Landscape with a Fishing Village in Gallery 23) and figure compositions (see his figures and animals in Joos de Momper’s A Summer Landscape with Harvesters, also in Gallery 23).
