Label Text:Otto Bacher was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Having begun his artistic development in America, he traveled first to Munich and later to Venice. He was a close friend of Whistler, eventually writing a book about Whistler's career in Venice (Whistler worked there from autumn 1879 to autumn 1880).

The Bacher works in this exhibition were inspired by the Venetian works of Whistler. In these prints Bacher displays a freely rendered line not common in his earlier prints. He was much criticized for the quality of his line and its similarity to Whistler's. Still others felt that the sketchiness was suited to his subject matter.
