Label Text:O. (Ogle) Winston Link was a commercial photographer and life-long train buff. From 1953 to 1960, Link made more than 2,200 photographs of steam engine-driven passenger and freight trains of the Norfolk & Western Railway system. Most of the images were made in small towns and rural sites in Virginia at night using a complex array of synchronized flash lighting banks. His photographs are deservedly admired for their technical expertise; for the dramatic nighttime lighting that makes the images seem like surreal stills from a Hollywood film; and for their devotion to the now vanished steam engines that once dominated train travel in this country.
