In 1986 Linda Butler began a photographic exploration of the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, documenting the material culture, landscape, and people. A selection of her images, Rural Japan: Radiance of the Ordinary, was published by the Smithsonian Institution Press in 1992.

At the time of the photo’s publication Linda Butler wrote, “This two-hundred-year-old garden is located outside a private home in the historic river town of Tsushima. Unfortunately, this plot of land will be covered with concrete when a highway is built connecting Tsushima and Nagoya. When community members protested, the city agreed to move the house and the entire garden to another site.”
