Label Text:Working in the darkroom, combining multiple images in one photograph using multiple enlargers, Jerry Uelsmann creates complex surrealistic visions full of wonder, humor, and poetry. Born in Detroit, he had the support and encouragement of his family who recognized his photographic talent at an early age. Like several other photographers represented in this exhibition he studied under Minor White and Ralph Hattersley at the Rochester Institute of Technology and his first published work appeared in Popular Photography magazine in 1957.
Uelsmann is an advocate of “post-visualization,” what he refers to as “the willingness on the part of the photographer to revisualize the final image at any point in the entire photographic process.”
