Robert Redfield’s photographic artistry was first recognized in the late 19th century when his work was shown in various European and American salons (juried exhibitions) of landscapes and genre scenes. His “open-air genre” images, such as A Morning by the Brook, are accurate, detailed, naturalistic views, usually with human figures harmRoniously integrated into the landscape.
This image is strongly related to the work of Peter Henry Emerson, whose Gladden-Cutter’s Return is displayed nearby. Emerson’s tradition of atmospheric and naturalistic photography served as a model for many American photographers, including Redfield, who advocated for photography as a fine art before Photo-Secession and the advent of Pictorialism.
