Label Text:Although photography was only one of his interests, Man Ray was more influential and creative in this medium than in his paintings, sculpture, films, and assemblages. In 1921 he temporarily left the United States for Paris, where he rapidly became one of the most noted photographers of the 1920s and 1930s, commanding handsome fees for portraits and fashion photography. This photograph is thought to be a fashion study featuring Man Ray’s favorite model, Nusch Éluard. While supporting himself with these traditional commercial commissions, Man Ray also experimented with photographic processes that permitted him to move beyond direct observation to poetic invention.
