Label Text:Wet Day on the Boulevard captures the character of the modern Paris created by Napoleon III’s reconstruction project. The narrow streets of old Paris would not have accommodated such a large crowd of people as is moving along this wide boulevard. The monumental scale illustrates the elegance and prosperity typical of the new face of the City of Lights.

As a foreigner viewing Paris through the lens of his camera, Steiglitz’s position is not altogether dissimilar from that of a visitor to this gallery, and his image can be understood as a testament to the international fame Paris still receives as a city that is itself a work of art.
