Label Text:Francis Frith was a pioneer in the history of photography. He was one of the three founders of the Liverpool Photographic Society in March 1853. They considered themselves ‘professional’ photographers rather than ‘gentleman practitioners’.
Frith employed large cameras and heavy glass negative plates to produce albumen silver prints of dramatic landscapes using the wet colloid method. This process required rapid development before the light-sensitive chemicals used to coat the glass plates dried. Therefore Frith and other early photographers had to take their equipment, chemicals, and darkroom with them wherever they photographed.
