Label Text:At their first meeting, Lucien Clergue showed a series of his photographs to Pablo Picasso that dealt with death through close-up images of the rotting carcasses of animals. According to Michel Tournier, who wrote the introduction to Eros and Thanatos: Lucien Clergue, published in 1985, Picasso’s own creative juices were stimulated as he had a skinned rabbit brought from the kitchen, “But you know, I can do carcasses too,” and proceeded to make a drawing for the young photographer. It is interesting to speculate on what continuing effect Clergue’s images had on Picasso’s art, as the two men remained very close friends (Picasso was godfather to Clergue’s daughter) until the death of Picasso.
