The photographs of Félix Bonfils are the most complete visual document of the Near East and its culture during the 19th century. Few European photographers of his era who traveled to this region concerned themselves with the people and their daily lives to the extent that Bonfils did. This photograph was part of his 1878 publication, Souvenirs d’Orient.
