Label Text:Beginning in the late 1880s, Eugène Atget photographed Paris and the surrounding areas, documenting the material culture and people. He produced over 10,000 images that he sold to architects, artists and artisans, decorators, publishing houses, libraries, and museums.

He began photographing in the environs of the Château de St-Cloud in 1904. Although the château itself was destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the gardens, redesigned by famed landscape designer André Le Nôtre in the late 17th century, remained.

This image, contact-printed from a glass plate negative and toned with gold chloride, is a detail of the garden that still exists today.
