Label Text:Though the depiction of fur clothing was common in paintings from this period, the precision required to incise realistic fur into a copper etching plate made etchings like this a tour de force of technique. Printmaker Wenceslaus Hollar completed a series of fashion images which included furs, as well as a number of striking still life prints that focused solely on the depiction of fur muffs.

This particular example of Hollar’s work gives some suggestion of the fashion prints, showing the muffs on the arms of a vaguely defined figure, but the furs themselves are obviously the primary subject.
