On a guéridon (pedestal table), he depicts a bottle, a knife, and a loaf of pain breton (a type of bread with slashed Louis Marcoussis treated his still life subject in a style and with motifs derived from the Cubisms of Picasso and Braque. Like other Cubists, Marcoussis here explores the relationship between objects and the space in which they are crust). Behind it lurks a double bass reduced to its shadow. He represents the space in and around these objects with overlapping planes differentiated by texture, tone, and color. Employing a wide range of printmaking effects in complex arrays of cross-hatching, line work, and muted colors, Marcoussis brings to this work a subtle climate of foreboding and mystery.
