Like Whistler's Becquet, Van Dyck did not complete this portrait of Philippe Le Roy beyond the highly detailed face. Unlike Whistler, however, Van Dyck would turn his plates over to craftsmen who would "complete" the compositions by adding a body and backgrounds.

Based on a full-length portrait painting by Van Dyck, this likeness of the young diplomat Philippe Le Roy (1596–1679) is an early state of the etching, before the details of the body and background were filled in. For his early portrait prints, like this one, Van Dyck etched the head and features before turning his plates over to craftsmen who would complete the compositions.
