Label Text:An early pioneer of photography in Britain, Samuel Buckle's first known photographic images date from 1851. He was a 'gentleman' photographer as the Buckle family had inherited a successful brewery in Peterborough. Buckle is known to have built a substantial 'labratory' thought to have been a combination workshop and studio from which he sold lightweight cameras of his own design and manufacture. There is no evidence of commercial photographic work from this 'studio,' thought to be the first stand-alone structure devoted to photography. Almost all of Buckle's known photographs are picturesque views of buildings and landscapes north of London. His photographic work was included in many exhibitions in England from 1853 through 1858.
