James Craig Annan was schooled in photography by his father, Thomas Annan. Working in his father’s studio, he specialized in commercial portraiture however; his personal work was concerned with the artistic integrity and independence of photography.
Whitehouse has a soft-focused painterly quality. The subtle gradations of blurred grays create both form and coloristic effects. Whitehouse is typical of Annan’s mature work featuring strong horizontal and diagonal compositional elements. Annan was probably influenced by Whistler, especially in his soft-focus and linear emphasis. His work was exhibited in New York City at 291, the gallery of the Photo-Secessionists movement.
