Label Text:Iliazd met the painter Niko Pirosmanachvili (1862-1918) in 1912 in Tiflis, Georgia. Shocked by the misery in which the artist lived and eager to draw attention to his exceptional talents, Iliazd published an article about the artist in a local paper in 1914. Nearly 60 years later, Iliazd decided to reprint this text to pay homage to his long-unrecognized friend. Picasso agreed to make the frontispiece, an idealized portrait of the Georgian painter. The printing of the text was completed by mid-December 1972. Iliazd made sure that the printed surface of the text on each page did not exceed the format of Picasso's drypoint. During a Christmas visit Iliazd made, Picasso signed all impressions of the print. Iliazd planned to visit Picasso again on April 9, 1973. However, on April 8, Picasso suddenly died. This was among the artist's last works.
