Label Text:Carmen was originally published in 1949 (see no. 25). In December 1957, Picasso adorned a copy of Carmen with drawings on the margins and blank pages in order to enhance the value of that copy of the book, which was to be sold in 1958 for the benefit oft he National Committee of Writers. Several years later a decision was made to publish a facsimile edition of his decorated copy of CARMEN. To accompany this new CARMEN, Picasso made a drypoint of a picador (1960), a lithograph of a torero and Spanish woman wearing a mantilla, and 4 aquatints (the fourth being reserved for the deluxe edition).
