Label Text:In 1924, the French poet Andre Breton issued the "First Surrealist Manifesto", calling for "pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either orally or in writing, the true function of thought.... Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations." This book reprints the 1924 manifesto, in addition to Breton's essays of 1929, 1930, 1942, and 1946. Three etchings by Matta illustrate this book of Breton texts, including this portrait of "a poet of our acquaintance" which precedes the 1930 essay on the "Second Surrealist Manifesto."
