The cover was designed and executed by Matisse especially for this publication.

Sewn gatherings (unsigned, 1--24 32 4--104 116 12--194 202 212 ±211 ) case bound into white wove paper covered boards, with a protective glassine jacket. The first and final leaves are affixed to the boards as pastedowns. A pochoir of a cut paper composition by Henri Matisse, incorporating his hand lettering, is printed in black, with green and blue, across both boards.
