Label Text:The adoration of Charlie Chaplin, or, “Chaplinitis,” that swept North America and Europe in the 1920s and 30s was not limited to the general public, but was widespread among artists and writers as well. Die Chapliniade, described as a “cinema-poem,” is an ode to Chaplin, in which Dadaist poet and author Iwan Goll describes him as the “greatest philosopher.” Goll praises Chaplin’s modernity and his witty confrontations of politics, art, and society. Fernand Léger, who designed the cover of this book and supplied five full-page illustrations, was infatuated with Charlot, as the French called Chaplin. Léger’s own film Ballet Mécanique (1924) plays with Chaplin’s image in a manner reminiscent of the caricature on this cover and the illustrations inside.
